How Much Sleep Do You Need And What Are The Benefits?

Sleep enables your body to support your physical health and your brain function. In children and teenagers, it also helps to support growth and development. However, if we are not getting the right amount of sleep we need for our bodies, it can have a negative impact on our overall well-being.

Why is it important to get enough sleep?
– It helps maintain a healthy body weight
– Supports a healthy immune system (less chance of getting sick)
– Clearer mindset allows you to do better in work or school
– Reduces stress levels and improves mood
– Increases your energy levels and alertness
– Improves balance
– Strengthens your heart
– Improves memory, concentration and productivity
– Decreases inflammation

How much sleep is recommended?
0 to 3 months: 14 to 17 hours per day
4 to 11 months: 12 to 15 hours per day
1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours per day
3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours per day
6 to 13 years: 9 to 11 hours per day
14 to 17 years: 8 to 10 hours per day
18 to 25 years: 7 to 9 hours per day
26 to 64 years: 7 to 9 hours per day
65+ years: 7 to 8 hours per day

When we are tired, our ability to focus, our reflexes, and our reaction time all decrease. This leads to an increased risk of getting injured or getting into a car accident. Therefore, it’s a good idea to start prioritising your sleep schedule so you can perform as the best version of yourself on a day-to-day basis.
