The Plantar Fascia is a thick piece of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes. When this tissue becomes inflamed, we can experience a sharp stabbing-like pain near the heel. It is typically more prominent in the mornings or after long periods of rest. This is called Plantar Fasciitis.
What causes Plantar Fasciitis?
Often, some of the main causes are as simple as excess stress on the foot (eg. standing for extended periods, running, etc), wearing footwear that lacks adequate support, or being overweight.
Does physiotherapy help treat Plantar Fasciitis?
Physiotherapists can perform targeted manual therapy to help reduce inflammation and ease discomfort. They also provide specific exercises that will help strengthen your foot muscles and improve your foot’s flexibility. Doing this will stabilise the arch in your foot and distribute the pressure on the foot more evenly. Another way Physio’s can improve plantar fasciitis is with an ultrasound which sends sound waves deep within the tissue to aid healing and reduce inflammation.
Do Orthotics help with Plantar Fasciitis?
Yes! Customised orthotics are another great solution for managing Plantar Fasciitis. Here at Back To Health Physio we use computerised technology to design custom orthotics for your foot. Providing an insert to your shoe helps correct alignment issues that could have affected your plantar fascia in the first place and prevent irritation from coming back in the long run.
