The Difference Between A Sprain And A Strain

Sprains and Strains are common injuries that can happen to almost any body part. Some of the more common areas they can occur are the ankles, wrists, and knees.

Sprain and Strain both mean the same thing…which is a pull or tear to the body part. However, a Sprain is when this pulling/tearing occurs in a ligament or joint capsule and a Strain is when the pulling/tearing occurs in a muscle or tendon.

Sprains and strains are often caused by overstretching, overworking, twisting, or traumatising the affected area. They can also occur when we have a fall as we often land in awkward positions.

Like anything, sprains and strains come in different severities.
Grade 1 –  Tissue is overstretched with some small amount of torn fibres.
Pain is often still significant. You could experience cramping, tightness, and the inability to move your body part to its full range of motion.

Grade 2 – A larger but incomplete tear.
Pain usually begins immediately. The injured area will typically be sore to the touch and have a lot of swelling, bruising, and limited strength.

Grade 3 – A complete tear.

Typically there will be an immediate burning or stabbing sensation. You will be unable to move the injured area and there will be physical bruising.

If you think you have experienced a sprain or strain, don’t hesitate to see a physio. It is best to see a physio as soon as possible after you have experienced the initial trauma. We can use effective treatments straight away as well as educate you on how to manage the injury to maximise recovery.
