When Should You Be Concerned About Pins And Needles?

Almost all of us experience pins and needles! The uncomfortable tingling typically occurs when we sit or lie in a certain position for too long, causing pressure to be placed on our nerves or vascular structure. Often, all it takes to relieve the pressure is changing positions, massaging our body part, or walking it off.

However, there are some circumstances where pins and needles should be checked by a professional. Educating yourself on these circumstances will help you identify them if they ever pop up for you.

Conditions often associated with pins and needles…

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: This is compression of the median nerve. It causes pain in the wrist and hand and can also cause pins and needles
  • Spinal nerve root compression: Most commonly occurs due to a bulging disc. It can cause a burning/stabbing sensation in the leg, lower back, arm, or neck.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Gradual onset of pins and needles, numbness, sensitivity to touch and a sharp burning/throbbing pain in your hands and/or feet.
If you are experiencing ongoing pins and needles alongside any of the above symptoms, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor.

Pins and needles are usually just a benign experience. If it is something you experience occasionally and have no other symptoms, it is unlikely to be a cause for concern. And on the odd occasion, your pins and needles may be due to an underlying cause that may require some treatment.
