Next Monday on the 20th of October, is World Osteoporosis Day. This is a great opportunity for us all to remember to take care of one of the most important, yet often the most overlooked parts of our health…our bones.
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures from even minor falls or bumps. It’s sometimes called a “silent disease” because bone loss happens gradually and without pain, until a fracture occurs.
While osteoporosis is more common in older adults, especially women after menopause, bone health matters for everyone, at every age.
The good news is that there are many things you can do to build and maintain strong bones throughout life.
Here are a few key ways to protect your bone health…
- Move regularly: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises (like walking, climbing stairs, or strength training) help stimulate bone growth and maintain density.
- Get enough calcium and vitamin D: These nutrients are essential for bone formation and strength. Aim to get them through a balanced diet and sensible sunlight exposure.
- Avoid smoking and excess alcohol: Both can accelerate bone loss.
- Check your posture and balance: Good movement habits reduce fall risk and prevent fractures.
