There are 2 types of treatment when you come to see a physiotherapist!
The first is Passive Intervention which is the treatment performed by the physio. Dry needling, taping, scenar, and manual therapy – mobilisation and tractions are all great examples of this type of intervention. These usually aim to reduce pain and improve flexibility.
The second is Active Intervention which includes improving the main components of fitness such as muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and body composition. Depending on the patient, the exercises that physios provide will aim to improve one or more of these components.
When we experience pain in our body, or an injury, we are often lacking strength and durability in at least one of these body compositions. And like most areas of life, we cannot achieve the maximum strength in one appointment. That is why physios provide you with exercises! So you can work on strengthening your weakest body components in between appointments.
By strengthening the aspects that help your body to function, you as the client can tackle the pain, prevent the injury from getting worse, and strengthen the weak area to make sure that the pain doesn’t come back.
Not all clients require exercises, and instead, some need more appointments that involve Passive Intervention. It just depends on the injury! However, if your physio does give you exercises, it is important to do them at home so you reach your recovery goals faster and can get back to doing everyday activities without pain.
