GLA:D is an education and exercise program developed in Denmark by a team of researchers. It is currently the best treatment option for individuals with hip and knee osteoarthritis.

How does GLA:D work?
GLA:D uses neuromuscular exercise to improve joint stability, movement quality, and everyday function. Neuromuscular training is a form of exercise that enhances the unconscious motor responses through sensory signals and central mechanisms.

How often is GLA:D?
GLA:D typically consists of a 1-hour session twice a week for at least 6 weeks. However, you can also do 1 session once a week for 12 weeks. Both of these options contain 2 education sessions.

Is GLA:D only for people with osteoarthritis?

GLA:D is designed and beneficial for individuals with osteoarthritis in their hips or knees, or for individuals with the following symptoms…

  • Morning pain and joint stiffness that only improves with gradual movement
  • Joint pain that worsens with load (EG: stairs, walking, gardening, or exercise)
  • Joint swelling or tenderness
  • Difficulty twisting or turning
  • Clicking or grinding symptoms

Is GLA:D going to help?
The GLA:D program has been seen to…

  • reduce hip pain by 25% and reduce knee pain by 29% within just 3 months
  • 87% satisfaction rate
  • reduce pain by 36%
  • after 12 months, 75% of individuals considering knee and hip surgery felt like they no longer needed it
