How to Prepare Your Body for the Summer Sports Season Ahead

With summer just around the corner, many of us are gearing up for our favourite summer sports. Whether it’s surf lifesaving, tennis, little nippers, cricket, or simply getting back into running and swimming, it’s important to prepare your body properly to reduce the risk of injury and perform at your best.

How can you prepare your body for summer sports?

1. Build Up Gradually
One of the biggest mistakes people make is jumping straight back into full training or long sessions. Give your body time to adapt by gradually increasing the intensity and duration of your workouts over several weeks. This helps strengthen muscles, joints, and tendons, and reduces the chance of strains or overuse injuries.
2. Focus on Strength and Mobility
Many summer sports require quick changes of direction, endurance, and explosive movements. Incorporating strength training (especially for your core and legs) and regular stretching or mobility exercises can improve performance and lower your injury risk. Even a few short sessions each week can make a big difference.
3. Don’t Forget Warm-Up and Recovery
A proper warm-up primes your body for action. Dynamic stretches, light jogging, or sport-specific drills help activate the muscles you’ll be using. Equally important is recovery – cooling down, stretching, and allowing rest days between intense sessions so your body can repair and grow stronger.
4. Stay Hydrated and Heat-Smart
The Australian summer can be tough. Make sure you stay well hydrated, especially if you’re training outdoors, and listen to your body on hot days. Training early in the morning or later in the evening can help you avoid peak heat.

By taking a little time now to prepare, you’ll be ready to enjoy a safe, strong, and active summer season.
